Honestly I can’t even begin to tell you how life changing my ModiBodi pants have been. I have super sensitive skin and as you know I also suffer from eczema. I used to always get redness and soreness on the skin where the pads had been, as well as a line of eczema (not what you want down there) every time I used those awful pads from Always with the gross floral scent.
So a few years ago I switched to organic cotton pads like Yoni and Kind. They helped a lot and I stopped getting the redness and eczema, but they were so uncomfortable and I hated how they would shift and move around, and I would always leak at night. Then, I found ModiBodi, and my life changed.
What are period pants?
Period pants are a reusable, washable, and eco-friendly period product that essentially does the same job as a tampon or sanitary towel.
They’re far more sustainable than traditional disposable period products, and much easier to use and more comfortable than Mooncups. They feel just like normal underwear (just a bit thicker) and it honestly doesn’t feel as though you’re wearing anything!
How do ModiBodi period pants work?
You literally just use them like normal underwear, but instead of putting a sanitary towel in them or inserting a tampon, you just wear the underwear and it catches everything in the thickened lining.
You should buy the thickness of underwear based on what type of flow you have – so if you have a light flow but the light pairs, if it’s heavy buy the heavy pairs, or if it’s a mix (like mine, so light for a few days and heavy for 2-3 days) then buy a mix of different absorbencies.
I have a few pairs of light, a couple of medium, and a few of heavy.
Do period pants actually work or do they leak?
They 100% work! I have a heavy flow for around two days of my cycle (I usually get through 4 super pads within 24 hours), and with the heavy period pants I only have to wear two pairs of pants during the day, and one at night, and so far I have only ever had one leak on a particularly heavy day (and it was just at the sides of the pants, but didn’t actually leak through to my clothes).
I haven’t leaked at night though which is a miracle – at night time I used to always leak even with the night time pads on, but with my reusable period pants I’ve had absolutely no leaks. They’re honestly life changing!
How long can you wear ModiBodi period pants for?
I would say if you have a super heavy flow you might want to change them as needed. However on my heavy days I can wear my heavy flow pairs for half a day (maybe 6+ hours) without them feeling ‘damp’ or smelling.
But that’s the incredible thing about ModiBodi period pants – the top of the lining stays dry the majority of the time as the material absorbs and wicks away all of the blood into the layers within the pants!
It’s only if you’re really heavy and wear them all day or overnight that they might start to feel damp, but you really need to make sure you buy the right ones for your flow, and change them when you need to – they’re not a miracle product that can allow you to wear them constantly without changing etc.
Do I wear them alone or with a tampon or pad?
You wear them alone! No need for a tampon or pad 🙂
Do ModiBodi pants smell?
I personally haven’t experienced any smell, but suppose it will depend on your flow and how long you wear them for. It’s obviously not advisable to wear them to the point they start smelling and to change them as soon as you do notice a smell.
Will period pants work on a heavy period?
Yes! As I said, my period is heavy for around two days each cycle (my period lasts around 6-7 days in total), and they work perfectly. I’ve only had one leak which thankfully didn’t go through to my clothes, with none at night time, and I find they’re much more comfortable than a scratchy and irritable pad or tampon that has come loose. When it comes to clots, the clots just sit on the surface of the lining and you can just wipe them away as you would a sanitary towel.
Are period pants comfortable?
SO comfortable! My ModiBodi period pants have changed my life. They’re so comfy they just feel like normal (albeit giant) underwear, and you can’t even tell you’re wearing a period product. I’m not going to lie, they are ugly AF and not exactly cute and sexy, but who wants cute and sexy when you’re on your period?
Can you see them through tight clothing and jeans?
Nope! I haven’t tried wearing a tight bodycon dress with them or anything, so not sure about that, but I’ve worn the heavy ones (so quite thick ones with a larger lining that extends all the way around the bum area) with tight skinny jeans and you can’t see a thing.
I do have quite a large bum anyway though so I’m not sure if you just can’t tell because my bum has quite a bit of its own cushioning haha.
How many pairs of period pants do I need?
I would say to start with just one pair and see if you like them first. That’s what I did and it was interesting seeing the difference between using the period pants vs pads and tampons. If they work for you and you like them, then buy a set for your whole period.
With buying a set, I’d say make sure you have at least a pair for each day and a pair for each night of your period, or if you’re on a budget buy maybe half what you need, and then wash them after using and rotate etc (so the ones you wear at the start of your period, wash them in the middle of your period and wear them again at the end) if that makes sense?
If you have a heavier flow, definitely buy 2-3 pairs for each day of your heaviest days.
Top tip when buying period pants:
I find it easier to choose different colours for the different flow thickness types. So I have pale blue for the lighter ones, nude for the medium flow ones, and black for the heavy flow ones.
It makes it easier to grab them out of the drawer without having to check which ones you’ve grabbed, and making sure you’ve grabbed the right ones so you don’t have any leaks because you’ve picked up the wrong ones by accident!
How do you wash ModiBodi underwear?
You’re supposed to rinse them under cold water, squeeze them out, rinse and repeat, until the water flows clear and the blood is rinsed out. Then you put them in the washing machine with your other washing on a cold wash.
I personally get a bit icky rinsing them as I’m not good with blood, so sometimes I’ll just throw them in a cold wash without rinsing, but you do get sort of used to it and they still wash perfectly even if you skip the hand-rinse first. Make sure you wash them on a cold wash though!! Cold water is best for blood and blood stains.
When it comes to drying them, you can either tumble dry them on low, or air-dry them indoors or in the sunshine outside. The only problem with air-drying indoors is because they’re so thick they take ages to dry, especially in the cooler winter months.
I find putting them on the radiator or at least very close to it helps them dry within about a day, whereas air-drying with the natural air indoors takes them about 2-3 days to dry.
Why are they so expensive? Are they worth the money?
They’re so expensive because they’re proper underwear and save you lots of money long-term! I think they’re 100% worth the money and expense.
They will last you years and they’re much healthier and more sustainable than throwing away dozens of plastic chemical-filled tampons and pads each month that are awful for the environment (and for your body, too).
