WHAT IS PERIOCULAR DERMATITIS (EYE ECZEMA)?
Periocular dermatitis (eye eczema) is a type of eczema that affects the skin around the eyes. It can cause the skin on and around your eyes to become red, itchy, and inflamed, and in severe cases, the skin may crack or bleed.
Periocular dermatitis is often accompanied by other symptoms such as watery eyes, burning eyes, and a feeling of sand in the eyes. The exact cause of periocular dermatitis is unknown, but it is thought to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Treatment for periocular dermatitis focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing flare-ups. In mild cases, over-the-counter moisturizers and antihistamines may be all that is needed. More severe cases may require prescription corticosteroids or immunosuppressants.
