HOW TO TREAT SKIN DISCOLOURATION FROM ECZEMA?

Skin discolouration from eczema is an issue mostly found in black and Asian eczema sufferers, although it can also affect white people too. All races and skin tones can develop pigmentary alterations of hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening), but it’s much more prevalent on darker skin due to the higher concentration of pigment produced.

Treating skin discolouration on darker skin

On darker skin, the skin’s pigmentation can turn darker or lighter once the dryness has disappeared, and tends to last much longer than on paler skin. The pigmentation issues are most likely the result of melanin skin cells that are damaged or inflamed from the eczema flare-up. Because people of colour produce more pigment, it can cause a deeper leftover mark once the dry inflammatory rash has gone.

To treat discolouration and pigmentation issues your doctor or dermatologist may prescribe medication in the form of a cream. If you’d like to avoid using medicated creams and want to try using organic options first, Rosehip Oil (like the A’kin Rosehip Oil) and Argan Oil are both incredible natural oils that help with skin discolouration. Alternatively you could create a combination of the two oils and mix them together, just make sure they’re very high quality versions of the oils – ideally you’ll want a high-quality, cold-pressed and organic Argan Oil.

Treating skin discolouration on pale skin

On pale skin, skin discolouration can make the skin appear darker than usual, or the skin can retain a shade of pink/red even after the dryness has gone. Similar to darker skin, you can treat pigmentation with Rosehip Oil and Argan Oil, but always make sure they’re high quality oils.

Important note on organic vs medicated solutions

It’s important to note that while I always advocate for organic products, I also think it’s very important to see a doctor and use medicated products if organic products aren’t working for you. Sometimes our bodies need that extra bit of help from medication, and we need to embrace the science behind these products to help us heal faster. Pigmentation is a very difficult problem to fix with organic products, so I would definitely suggest seeing your doctor or dermatologist for advice if Rosehip/Argan oils aren’t making much of a difference for you after a couple of months of use.
